Fortunate Moments for Unfortunate Franchises: The Phoenix Suns and Saint Westphal
Rule no. 5, Section VI, j. Requests for a timeout in excess of the authorized number of combined regular and 20-second timeouts shall be granted and a technical foul shall be assessed. Following the timeout, the ball will be awarded to the opposing team and play shall resume with a throw-in nearest the spot where play was interrupted.
1976 NBA Finals, Game 5
Fact #1: With a few seconds left in regulation, the Celtics' Paul Silas tried calling a timeout. Boston did not have a timeout, and if referee Richie Powers had granted the timeout that he saw Silas attempting to call, Phoenix would have gotten a technical free throw. Richie Powers did not grant the timeout.
Fact #2: Game 5 was the first-ever triple overtime finals game, and only the second-ever triple overtime playoff game.
Fact #3: The Suns out-rebounded the Celtics 62 to 28, yet the Celtics attempted 116 field goals to the Suns 112. I'm not even sure how that is mathematically possible. Equally astounding, in a triple overtime game in which three players played 55+ minutes, the Celtics leading rebounder grabbed five boards.
In any other game one of these facts would be the lead story. Game 5 was not any other game.
Backstory
Even getting to the Finals was accomplishment enough. The Suns only started playing in 1968, and had made the playoffs once before the 1975-76 season. They backed into the 1976 playoffs with a 42-40 record, but somehow beat the Seattle Sonics in the Western Conference Semifinals. Their run should have ended in the Western Conference Finals when they played against the Warriors, the previous seasons champion and holder of the best regular season record. Led by a balanced scoring attack (six players averaged between 13 and 19 points per game for the series) the Suns defeated the Warriors in Game 7, winning the right to face the Boston Celtics.
If it wasn't clear to the Celtics that the Suns were a team to fear, it was apparent by Game 5. After losing the first two games of the series in the Boston Garden, the Suns evened the series at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. They returned to the Garden and gave the Celtics all that they could.

Paul Westphal has had many great days on the basketball court. He has spent 40 year in basketball, winning an NBA Championship as a player, coaching a team to the NBA Finals, and is a nominee for the Basketball Hall of Fame. His greatest game ever, however, has to be Game 5.
Play #1: With less than a minute left in regulation, Westphal stole the ball from Jo Jo White, was fouled as he made the ensuing layup, and hit his free throw to tie the game.
Play #2: With 15 seconds left in the 2nd overtime and the Suns trailing by one, Westphal stole the ball from John Havlicek (he of Havlicek stole the ball fame), and his teammate Curtis Perry hit a shot to put the Suns up one.
Here's where things got crazy. There were six seconds left, and Havlicek used five of them to set-up and hit an eight-foot bank shot. The buzzer sounded and Celtics fans, thinking they had won, rushed the court. Referee Richie Powers insisted that one second be put back on the clock, and was assaulted by a fan for his trouble. Fans were cleared from the court, though they still ringed it menacingly.
With one second left, and in-bounding from under their own basket, the Suns had nary a prayer of winning. So Westphal called a timeout. A timeout the Suns didn't have, and so he was given a technical foul. But in 1976 the rule governing excess timeouts was different than Rule no. 5, Section VI, J cited up above. (They would change the rule the next year, much to the chagrin of a young Chris Webber) The Celtics were given a free throw (that Jo Jo White sunk) before the Suns were granted their timeout. While Suns coach Jack MacLeod was diagramming a last second play, Celtics fans freely ran in and out of the huddle.
So why'd Westphal call a timeout that he knew he didn't have? Because he knew (who knows how...what current NBA player has read the rulebook and knows how excess timeouts are handled?) that after the technical free throw, the Suns would get to inbounds from half court. Westphal figured that it was better to inbounds from half court down two than to inbounds from under your own basket down one.
We can't say for sure what would have happened had Westphal not called the timeout, but likely he would've lobbed the ball down court, where his team would fail to get a shot off. We do know what happened because of his timeout call: Garfield Heard (great name) hit a jumper from the top of the key to tie the game. The Suns couldn't win the game, as the three-point line wouldn't be adopted for another three seasons.
The Aftermath
Paul Westphal continued his heroics in the third overtime, making two baskets with less than thirty seconds left and nearly getting another steal before the Suns lost 128-126. They would lose Game 6 two days later.
17 years later Westphal would lead the Suns to their only other NBA Finals appearance, riding the Round Mound of Rebound to a six game loss to the Chicago Bulls. They would never come as close to winning an NBA Championship as they did in Game 5 of the 1976 Finals.

Outside the Lines: Mamadou Ndiaye
18 Jahre. 2,28m. Schuhgrösse 57. Das sind die Richtwerte von Mamadou Ndiyae, High School Basketball Sensation aus dem Senegal. Ein kalifornischer College-Scout hatte den damals erst 16-jährigen in der einzigen überdachten Sporthalle des westafrikanischen Landes (!) entdeckt und ihm den Weg in die USA geebnet. Über die kleine Vorbereitungsschule Stoneridge Prep, die ihm beim Visum half, landete Ndiyae schliesslich an der katholischen Brethren Christian High School in Huntington Beach, wo er nächstes Jahr seinen Abschluss machen wird. Eine Pflegefamilie, die ihre Identität gegenüber den Medien nicht preisgeben möchte, nahm den sanften Riesen bei sich auf und betreut ihn seitdem.
Ndiyae's unkontrolliertes Wachstum wurde von einem Tumor in der Hirnanhangsdrüse ausgelöst - die gleiche Krankheit übrigens, die ex-NBA Hüne Gheorge Muresan auf unglaubliche 2,35m hatte anwachsen lassen. Mehrere Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen sammelten Bargeld, um Ndiayes dringend benötigte Operation bezahlen zu können. Ohne die Tumorentfernung wäre der Jugendliche innerhalb von zwei Jahren komplett erblindet. Glücklicherweise blieb ihm das Schicksal aber erspart, und er konnte seinen mysteriösen und von vielen Fragezeichen umsäumten Lebensweg fortsetzen - ebenso wie seine noch junge Basketballkarriere. Mit 22.9 Punkten, 13.2 Rebounds und 4.7 Blocks pro Spiel gehört Ndiyae zu den besten Nachwuchsspielern des Landes.College-Coaches trieft links und rechts bereits jetzt das Wasser aus den Mundwinkeln. Sicher: Ndiaye (nicht zu verwechseln mit ex-NBA Spieler Mamadou N'diyae) ist roh, wirkt noch unbeholfen und spielt in seiner unterklassigen High School Liga gegen Zwerge. Aber: "You can't teach Height". Sein Potential macht, nicht nur aufgrund seiner absolut unrealistischen Grösse, Lust auf mehr. Er wirkt gefühlvoll und mächtig zugleich und könnte - mit ein wenig Big Man Einzelunterricht - zur unaufhaltsamen Low Post Waffe mutieren. Sein High School Coach Jon Bahnsen ist davon überzeugt: "Mamadou ist das grösste menschliche Wesen, das ich je gesehen habe. Aber er ist nicht nur gross, sondern kann auch ziemlich gut Basketball spielen." Das sehen immer mehr Beobachter so. Sie belagern mittlerweile die Turnhallen der Umgebung (Brethren High School hat selbst keine), in denen der gigantische Teenager seine gleichaltrigen Gegner nach Belieben dominiert. Ndiaye, den all seine Mitmenschen als schüchtern, aber lustig und aufgeschlossen beschreiben, ist die ganze Aufmerksamkeit um seine Person noch nicht ganz geheuer. Daran wird er sich aber wohl oder übel gewöhnen müssen. Vor allem wenn sein Weg - wie alle behaupten - ihn in zwei bis drei Jahren in die NBA führt...

Brilla el trio de Minnesota sobre Houston
Michael Beasley anotó el lunes 34 puntos, el español Ricky Rubio consiguió 18 tantos y 11 asistencias y los Minnesota Timberwolves vencieron a los Houston Rockets 120-108 en el regreso a Houston de su entrenador Rick Adelman.Kevin Love encestó 29 puntos para los Timberwolves, que definieron un partido parejo al conseguir 42 puntos en el tercer cuarto, su segmento más prolífico de la temporada.
Minnesota también logró su mejor marca de efectividad de la temporada, con 58% de sus tiros de campo (43 en 74 intentos), y superó por 14 su máxima anotación en la campaña.

Das Spiel war in Halbzeit 1 noch recht eng umkämpft und ausgeglichen. Zwar hässlich wie Dwight Howard's Freiwürfe (5-13), aber wenigstens spannend. Dann kam Orlando einmal mehr aus der Kabine und schenkte das Spiel aus der Hand. Ich habe mir mal die Mühe gemacht, die Boxscores aller 9 Magic-Niederlagen in dieser Saison zu checken - und siehe da, immer das gleiche Muster. Orlando kommt immer im Q3 unter die Räder, ich zähle da 68 Punkte Unterschied in diesen 9 Partien. Irgendwas passiert da Abend für Abend in der Umkleide und nimmt dem gesamten Team den Wind aus den Segeln. Philadelphia gewann bereits sein 11. Heimspiel (Ligaspitzenwert) und bittet nun als nächstes Chicago und Miami zum Tanz.
Bulls 98, Wizards 88
Die Bulls verschwendeten in der Hauptstadt keine Sekunde und stellten schon früh die Verhältnisse klar. Derrick Rose erzielte mit 35 Punkten seine Saisonbestleisung und gewann das hoch antizpierte Duell gegen John Wall haushoch. Kyle Korver, der für Luol Deng in die Startformation gerückt war, traf 5 Dreier (17 Punkte). Chicago's Defensive erlaubte nur 40% aus dem Feld und gestattete zum 20. mal in 23 Partien seinem Gegner weniger als 100 Punkte.
Heat 109, Hornets 95
New Orleans startete furios, traf aus allen Lagen und führte lange, zwischenzeitlich sogar mit 12. Dwyane Wade und Lebron James hatten dann aber genug gesehen. Der gefürchtete Fast-Break Angriff der Heat überrannte die überforderten Hornets nach der Pause ein ums andere Mal. Nach dem 36-19 im dritten Viertel war die Partie dann schon entschieden. Michael Beasley war die grosse Story beim 120-109 Auswärtssieg in Houston. Der eigenwillige Forward traf 10 von 14 aus dem Feld und stellte mit 34 Punkten von der Bank einen neuen Franchise-Rekord auf. Ebenfalls rekordverdächtig: Minnesota's 42 Punkte im dritten Viertel, mit dem sie ein zuvor ausgeglichenes Spiel an sich rissen. Ricky Rubio schrammte haarscharf an einem Triple Double vorbei (18/8/11). Kevin Love beteiligte sich mit 29 Punkten am 10. Wolves-Sieg der Saison, und Coach Rick Adelman triumphierte bei seiner ersten Rückkehr an seine alte Wirkungsstätte.
Spurs 83, Grizzlies 73
Es war das zweite Aufeinandertreffen zwischen den Spurs und Grizzlies seit dem Erstrundenupset letztes Jahr. Spurs-Rookie Kawhi Leonard (12 Pts/10 Reb) frustrierte Memphis-Star Rudy Gay den ganzen Abend lang und erlaubte ihm nur 1 mickrigen Punkt. Auch Marc Gasol (7 Punkte) wurde von San Antonio's Defensive gut in Schach gehalten. Das reichte dem Team von Greg Popovich trotz mieser 40% Trefferquote zum Auswärtssieg. Topscorer der Partie war OJ Mayo mit 17 Punkten. Matt Bonner (15) traf 5 Dreier für die Spurs und drängt sich für den ASG 3-Punkte-Wettbewerb auf.
Bucks 103, Pistons 82
Platz da, die Bucks kommen! Dank eines vorentscheidenden 12-2 Laufs nach der Pause gewannen die Hirsche aus der Bierstadt zum 5. mal in den letzten 7 Partien und pirschen sich an .500 heran - eine Bilanz, die im Osten locker zu einer Playoff-Teilnahme reicht. Brandon Jennings (21) setzte seinen sehr guten Saisonstart fort, Drew Gooden (16) und Mike Dunleavy (20) besorgten gegen die pathetischen Pistons den Rest. Die Bucks klettern mit dem Sieg (Heimbilanz 6-2) zum ersten Mal in dieser Saison auf einen Playoff-Platz.
Jazz 93, Trailblazers 89
Der Utah Jazz macht in der heimischen Energy Solutions Arena weiter sein Ding, und je mehr Spiele gewonnen werden, desto grösser werden Paul Millsap's Aussichten auf einen Platz im All-Star Team. Der Power Forward gewann das Duell gegen Lamarcus Aldridge mit 19 Punkten, 15 Rebounds und 2 Blocks. Gordon Hayward war dank mehrerer Plays an beiden Enden des Courts der Matchwinner für Utah, das die Partie mit einem 13-0 Run beendete und in der Tabelle damit weiterhin vor den Blazers bleibt.
Mavericks 122, Suns 99
Phoenix ist ohne seinen zweimaligen MVP Steve Nash eine absolute Witzfigur. Das wurde heute bei der 23-Punkte Schlappe auf eigenem Parkett überdeutlich. Dallas nutzte die Abwesenheit des 37-jährigen für eine entspannt-dominante Teamleistung mit übertrieben sicheren Trefferquoten (55% FG, 51% Dreier), der höchsten Punkteausbeute dieser Saison in einer Halbzeit (66) und Throwback-Performances von Delonte West (25) und Vince Carter (21). Die Mavs haben jetzt 6 ihrer letzten 7 Partien gewonnen und dominieren die Suns weiterhin nach Belieben (8. Sieg in Folge gg. PHX).
Clippers 112, Thunder 100
Aufgepassst auf die Clippers! Das andere LA-Team hat nach dem überdeutlichen und nie gefährdeten Sieg im Spitzenspiel gegen OKC jetzt die Thunder, Nuggets, Heat, Lakers und Mavericks geschlagen und nähert sich der Spitzenposition in der Western Conference. Es war ein irres Spiel voller Highlights. Zwei davon waren sicherlich Blake's Mordversuch gegen Kendrick Perkins und vier Clippers-Dreier innerhalb von 50 Sekunden direkt vor der Pause, die ein knappes 6-Punkt Spiel in eine Demontage verwandelten. Chris Paul (26 Punkte, 14 Assists) zeigte einmal mehr, warum er der beste Einser der Liga ist und lenkte das Spiel auf unnachahmlich beeindruckende Art. Blake Griffin und Caron Butler (je 22) sowie insgesamt 13 Dreier stellten die Thunder vor weitere unlösbare Probleme. Ein Kevin Durant (36) und Russell Westbrook (31) waren gegen die Clips nicht genug.
